Beyond Motion: Decoding the Psychology of Movement

What is a movement for you? Is it just a way to shift from one pose to another? Or a way to relocate yourself from place to place? Or maybe it is a way for self expression? What about the psychological sense of this word?

Simple 4 letters in a word move, and so many meanings!

In this article, we will look at the movement from a psychological perspective! I am talking about that inner feeling we feel when we do something in our life.

What forms could it take?

Feeling of stillness

Most of the time, this feeling is around the depression spectrum, varying from light to severe. It's tightly connected with a physical state; we may feel depressed and lose the desire to move, slowing down not only in our minds but in reality too. Often in this state, we do the most basic things and the inner feeling corresponds to that. It is a spectrum so it could be somewhere from occasionally feeling low to staying in bed for the entire day.

Feeling of stuckness

This feeling is common among the people who live on autopilot. You go to work/school, do daily tasks, and even engage in some sports or hobbies. Yet, in most parts of your daily life,it feels like it's always the same—a repetitive cycle. Same day, same schedule, same tasks. You lose interest in what you are doing. It seems like all is useless and has no point.

Feeling of hamster wheel

This feeling is most out of balance with physical movement. Despite a busy routine, there's a lack of progress. You do a lot of tasks, going to different places and yet you feel totally stuck. As one of my clients identified it as “Despite that I do a lot, it feels like there is a lack of movement!”. This feeling is common among the people who want changes in their life, who want to live bigger and brighter lives and do something in that direction. But it seems like no matter what you are doing, nothing changes.

Feeling of energy flow

A very pleasant and settling feeling observed in people aligned with their purpose. Who lights up inside and you can spot it from a mile away. It seems like they do it with ease and that they can do anything. Like there are no limits for them.

Feeling of pause

I thought for a while if I should include it in this list, as it can be put a bit to the side. Life is not a straight line; there are ups and downs. Sometimes we need to slow down. To recharge. To have some time to reflect on the past and envision the trajectory ahead. For some, it can be connected with inner circles, some more aligned with nature and its seasons. Whatever is the case for you, you need to know that this is totally normal and natural. And we need to notice and respect when we are in this state.

As you can see, there is a scale from stillness to flow, with some pauses along the way. And whenever you find yourself on this spectrum, it is in our power to shift and move forward.

So what can we do? If you find yourself in a stillness, it is time to ask yourself how are you feeling in general. Seek help, support and guidance that you need. It could be professional help or a soulful talk with a friend or relative. To move from being stuck, you need to review your life. Truly ask yourself what you are living for and start seeking for the things that will guide you and help align your life with your living. Some may do it easily, while others will greatly benefit from coaching.

Hamster wheel feeling is quite similar in terms of application with the previous one. Ask yourself if what you are doing is something you genuinely want. Is it just an expected phase on your way, or is it something that you are out of control? Review, reassign, revisit!

When you climb to the feeling of energy flow, remember not to be scared of the feeling of pause, especially if getting here was hard. Also, be aware that even at this level, you may feel like your energy is enough to do even more and you may need guidance on how and what to do!
